Can you use Ferris the Crab?
Published Last updatedFerris the Rustacean is a friendly crab and unofficial (but widely used) mascot of the Rust programming language.
Unlike the official Rust and Cargo logos, or other mascots like like Golangs Gopher, Ferris has an exceptionally open legal status.
Ferris was created by Karen Rustad Tölva in 2014 (so even before the 1.0 release!) and was released into the public domain under a Creative Commons CC0 dedication.
This means the original Ferris artwork is not owned by any individual or organization in a copyright sense. Anyone is free to use, modify, copy, and redistribute it without asking for permission or paying a license fee.
Because Ferris is in the public domain, you can use it in personal projects, open-source software, blog posts, presentations, illustrations, and commercial products such as stickers or Plushies. You can also adapt or redesign Ferris to fit your own style or message.
However, not every Ferris image you see online has the same status. Many community members have created awesome custom versions of Ferris, and those may be released under different licenses. Always check the license of the specific custom Ferris artwork you plan to use and if in doubt, ask the original artist.
Finally, you should avoid implying any form of official endorsement of your Ferris-related creation by the original author, unless it actually exists.
